original and completely intact two-part early 20th century city of detroit municipal street lamppost "pineapple" finial likely fabricated by or for general electric, schenectady, n.y., u.s.a. the pineapple-shaped finial was originally mounted on fluted city street lampposts containing a fanciful arc lamp bracket. the oversized decorative component dates to 1910-20. the cast iron finial features deep relief acanthus leaves resting atop an urn. the pineapple is recognized as a traditional expression of “welcome” throughout the south and in areas along the eastern seaboard. the original circular-shaped base remains intact. the brushed metal finish has been sealed with a clear coat lacquer. the base measures 8 inches in diameter. the overall height measures 23 3/4 inches.
