original "wacker's manual of the plan of chicago" authored by walter d. moody, managing director of the chicago planning commission. the book prefaces itself by stating, " in the following pages, the author aims to furnish a concise and interesting text book in which brief notice is taken of chicago's past, thoughtful consideration given chicago's present, and deep effort made to foresee chicago's future. the object is to prepare the student's mind for the reception of that portion of wacker's manual which is devoted to a study of the plan of chicago." charles henry wacker, for which the title names, was born in chicago, illinois, and was vice chairman of the general committee of the commercial club of chicago. in 1909 he was appointed chairman of the chicago plan commission by mayor busse. as commission chairman from 1909 to 1926, he championed the burnham plan for improving the city of chicago. the book follows its preface with a look at chicago through the lens of 1911; what it saw as its past, present and furture from the perspective of an early 20th century city planner. several illustrations, photographs, charts and maps illustrate the plans moody envisioned for the city of chicago and what knowledge he hoped to pass on to his next generation. in the introduction it states "chicago must grow to conform to a scientific plan to replace the makeshift that has tried to keep pace with the city's development in the past and to make this possible it must have a citizenship trained in its duties." moody takes a look at city building in ancient times, europe and describes the purpose of the plan by mapping out park and transportation, etc. the light brown buckram cloth hardcover has some staining and discoloration but very minimal damage to the hardcover is evident. all 147 pages of the book's interior remain bound and retain the luster. separation in the back from the spine evident. measures 8 1/2 x 10 inches.
