exceptionally well-built original c. 1870-1880 american antique industrial "wells fargo" diminutive strong box possibly fabricated by or for the vanderman mfg. co., willimantic, ct. the "fireproof" railroad strong box is comprised of cast iron with a brushed metal finish sealed with a clear coat lacquer. the interior is reinforced with a concrete and/or hard ceramic lining. the ornamental cast iron opposed drop handles are original and completely intact. the lockable cast iron lid with hasp slot and interlocking hinges held together with steel pins is fully functional. this type of strong box was often used to transfer gold, currency and/or important documents. measures 13 x 9 x 7.
