rare and completely intact late nineteenth century light aqua blue glass champagne beer style privy dug bottle manufactured for harry (or henry) torchiani in chicago, il. the tall, slim body slopes into a long and narrow neck with an applied blobtop collar that exhibits some rust from where a metal closure sat below the finish. the front body is embossed "excelsior / lager beer / from / h.torchiani / chicago." the reverse is embossed "this / bottle / not to be / sold." its base is smooth and side seams evidence manufacture with two leaf mold. the glass is irridized, but in good condition, exhibiting no major cracks or chips. crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture. h. torchiani was born in hamburg, germany in 1846 and came to the united states in 1864. he was employed in various enterprises until becoming connected with the val. blatz brewing co., of milwaukee, wisconsin. he organized his own firm of torchiani, kremer & co., conducting its bottling department. having sold out to his partners, torchiani spent a number of years in europe before returning in 1893 to found a business at 1530 north halsted street in chicago. torchiani was a manufacturer and patentee of hand power and air pressure pitching machines, as well as other industrial equipment for breweries.
