highly sought after c. 1880's american aesthetic movement six-arm oversized salvaged chicago chandelier designed and fabricated by thackara, buck, and sons, philadelphia, pa. the completely refinished and fully functional stunning 19th century interior residential ornamental cast brass and bronze converted gas chandelier was electrified around 1905-10. the eastlake style ceiling fixture contains six arms equipped with polished brass sockets and shade fitters with set screws. the intricate filigree and exotic organic design motifs are exceptional both in design and execution. the tubular brass stem or posts, along with tapered and turned canopies were found with the fixture "in situ." the richly colored lowery glazed majolica ceramic components with birds and plants greatly accentuate the fixture. light surface crazing evident. the thackara mfg. co. of philadelphia was established in 1842 by benjamin thackara sr., who for an extended period of time, worked with cornelius & baker, which during the mid-19th century was the largest gas fixture concern in the united states. when this firm went out of business. a number of years later, mr. thackara joined the house of miskey & merrill, which firm was succeeded by thackara, buck & co., who, on the retirement of mr. buck, became thackara, sons & co. and later the thackara mfg. company. diam: 32 1/2." hanging length: 49 1/2"
