completely intact and original 19th century american interior residential fireplace gas insert designed and patented in 1894 by henry g. and william r. dawson of chicago, il. the heavily ornamented cast iron gas insert features a pair of columns, forming the pilasters of the sides of the frame and having fluted shafts and decorative capitals. an irregular scrollwork embellishes the transverse or top bar of the frame. perhaps the most unique design characteristic is the serpentine fretwork at the base of the fireplace. the original black enameled finish remains largely intact. the surrounding copper flashing remains amazingly intact. the functional gas insert was fabricated by the dawson bros., company, chicago, il. measures 24 1/2 x 31 inches.
