original and amazingly intact 19th century antique american victorian era wrought iron window guard designed and fabricated by the f.p. smith wire & iron works, chicago, il. the black enameled forged iron architectural artifact originally served as an exterior residential window guard on a chicago graystone constructed in the late 1880's. the oversized grille features elegant fishtail scrollwork and barley twist finials arranged in a repeating pattern. the riveted and forged metal window guard remains in great overall condition, considering age. measures approximately 62 x 29 x 1 1/2 inches.
