antique nickel plated cast iron electric pyrometer. dates to the early 20th century. a pyrometer is a non-contacting device that intercepts and measures thermal radiation. this measure is used to determine temperature, often of the object's surface. manufactured by the brown instrument co., philadelphia, pa. the brown instrument company was known for high-quality instruments (such as pyrometers, thermometers, hygrometers, tachometers, pressure gauges, flow meters, and electrical meters) and industrial controls. the company was founded in 1857 in philadelphia by edward brown, inventor of the first pyrometer of american design. in 1934, the firm became a division of honeywell. exceptional representation or example of an early american pyrometer. measures 9 1/2 inches in diameter by 4 inches in depth.
