refinished original museum-quality documented c. 1928 exterior building facade ornamental cast iron frieze fragment recovered from the 30 w. washington building during its demolition in 1989. the heavy cast iron facade component was designed by hugh garden. the 17-story building, commonly referred to as the "stop and shop" was constructed in 1928 by the notable prairie school architectural firm of schmidt, garden & erikson. the washington street facade featured a central section of narrow vertically-accented windows framed on 4 sides by minimally decorated ornament. the facade consisted of black rose granite with the remaining floors containing white terra cotta (likely fabricated by midland or the american terra cotta company) with polychrome ornamentation. the chicago loop building's interior was finished in a montinello and york fossil marble. the historically significant building, along with neighboring structures were demolished to make was for "block 37," which after several years has finally been built as a mixed retail, office and living complex. the "stop and shop" contained the last supermarket in the loop. the combination gothic and geometric style iron fragment has been thoroughly cleaned with rust and black paint removed to reveal the casting detail. the exact fabricator or foundry is not known. the building was home to both hillman's and stop and shop grocery stores, with the former occupying the west portion of the first floor and the entire basement if the seventeen story building. the s. & s. store occupied quarters in the east section of the first and second floors. both companies used the 3rd and 4th floor for a time.
