c 1940's one of two refinished original welded joint american vintage industrial "department of defense" four-legged stationary tables

c. 1940's vintage american industrial brushed and sanded heavy gauge steel two tier stationary side table likely fabricated by the lyon metallic mfg. co., aurora, il. the original lightly incised brass plaque contains a defense plant corporation identification plate riveted against the angled steel (see left corner). the "dfc" was a subsidiary of the reconstruction finance corporation (rpc), which was an independent agency of the united states government, established and chartered by the us congress in 1932, during the administration of president herbert hoover. it was modeled after the war finance corporation of world war i. the agency gave $2 billion in aid to state and local governments and made loans to banks, railroads, mortgage associations and other businesses. it was continued by the new deal and played a major role in handling the great depression in the united states and setting up the relief programs that were taken over by the new deal in 1933. two virtually identical tables are available, with the other retaining the original red paint finish. the exterior has been treated with a clear coat lacquer. the structurally sound and stable factory table measures 24 x 18 x 33 inches.
