castle.\" the majority of the drugstore bottles are \"french square\" in shape, with long necks, flared lips and custom embossed lettering. the two-part hinge mold bottles are mostly colorless with the exception of the oversized dark amber glass bottle distributed by r.e. rhode, chemist, chicago. discoloration and iridescence consistent with prolonged exposure to and reaction from the soil's campaign extended along the entire route of the newly completed union pacific railroad. “who has not heard of buchu?” inquired one agent. “why, this magic word adorns every dead wall, fence, rock and telegraph pole from the atlantic to the pacific.” in the decades after the civil war, painted patent medicine slogans appeared on rocks, walls, trees, and private sheds and fences. these displays were often enormous and installed with disregard for property rights. the leaves of the buchu plant, a small woody shrub, had long been used in south africa by indigenous peoples as a traditional medicine. by 1840, the herb was officially recognized in america’s pharmacopoeia for irritations of the bladder and urethra and for disease of the prostate. however, helmbold’s recipe, labeled “genuine fluid extracts,” was a watered-down concoction of buchu with cubebs, licorice, caramel, molasses, peppermint – and, of course, alcohol. it was advertised as “a specific remedy” for an implausible laundry list of ailments: general debility, mental and physical depression, imbecility, and confused ideas. also on the list: hysteria, diseases of the bladder and kidneys, emaciation, constipation, epilepsy, and paralysis. with descriptive treatises on the horrors caused by “excesses in married life, early indiscretion, or self abuse,\" his \"miraculous\" formula could remedy, this bringing in great profits for helmbold. prone to excessiveness, helmbold moved his philadelphia establishment to new york. there, he constructed a $250,000 “temple of pharmacy,” dubbed the most “buchuful” structure on broadway. it featured marble floors, perfume- and soda-dispensing fountains, floor-to-ceiling mirrors, and tweeting canary birds. underneath this facade of grandeur, helmbold started to drink in excess, and was said to be “often crazy drunk.” over time, he deteriorated and was confined no less than seven times to an asylum, with intermittent recovery and relapses. in 1892, the inventor of “genuine fluid extracts” died in his 66th year at his new jersey seaside residence, where he had once entertained famous dignitaries, including president ulysses s. grant. the privy dug bottle oxide deposits pulled from the iron pontil rod. the bottle is free from cracks or breaks. dyotvillle glassworks was founded englishman, thomas w. dyott, a young, self-proclaimed doctor who began selling \"medicinal\" elixirs in the form of vegetable nervous cordial, infallible toothache drops and stomach bitters from a philadelphia-based drug store located at 2nd and race street during the early 19th century. his great success in the patented medicine business allowed him to purchase kensington glass works during the 1820's. there, he could produce and bottle his concoctions along with that of competitors. by the 1830's his rapidly expanding glassworks, located in the town of dyottville, pa., would employ hundreds of highly skilled glassmakers that produced over ten thousand pounds of glass a day. by 1837 the economic depression, coupled with charges of defrauding the community would spell the end to dyott's empire.  at the age of 70 years, dyott was sentenced to the eastern state penitentiary. shortly thereafter, his glassworks factory would close and the small town of dyottville was essentially wiped off the map. the glassworks would later be purchased by prominent syruped soda water was bottled in this country by eugene roussel who kept a perfumery shop in philadelphia. he had a dispensing apparatus in his store, and the idea came to him that there was a legitimate extension of his business in the bottling and sale of soda or mineral water. the first syrup bottled was lemon, and roussel soon established a business and a reputation, and was followed closely by other philadelphia competitors, so that within a few years there were no less than half a dozen manufacturers of bottled carbonates in the quaker city alone. it took about six years for the new trade to reach new york, for in the spring of 1843 three soda-water bottling establishments were opened simultaneously by philadelphians john tweddle, a. w. rapp and thomas newton. they all began bottling within the same week. the first bottled soda water sold in new york, was made by roussel in philadelphia and shipped to john tweddle for sale. it was \"pure food\" soda even in those days, for the greatest care was exercised in its compounding and preparation; the sugar employed was the best loaf, the whites of eggs were used to clarify it and the syrup was well-boiled and strained carbonating were hauled by wagon from lake michigan. “hutchinson’s patent spring stopper” was invented in april 1879. hutchinson’s stopper gained widespread popularity with bottlers and consumers as corks and most other types of external and internal bottle closures were rendered obsolete and hutchinson’s inexpensive internal stoppers became the north american soda bottling industry’s standard closure.  The “hutchinson era” lasted from 1879 until just before world war I.  hutchinson’s patent spring stopper is second only to painter’s crown closure in terms of total industry He stayed in decorah for six months and then returned back to milwaukee to work for carl kunchel until 1873. the same year he would form a partnership with phillip madlener. they called the company graf \u0026amp; madlener manufacturers of soda water (weiss beer brewery). from 1877 to 1883 the company was located at 530 national   ave and went by the name south side white beer brewery. Sometime in 1883 john graf became the sole owner of the company. the company now was called the john graf south side white beer brewery. in 1913 the company would incorporate and was called the john graf co. john passed away on may 16 1930. his son took over the company with his sister sylvia graf as president of the firm. sylvia passed away in 1963. john graf sr.'s  grandson lawrie then took over the company and under his leadership the company became nationally known for grandpa graf's root beer. lawrie graf sold the company to p \u0026amp;  atlas industrial center in 1968. this firm allowed him to purchase kensington glass works during the 1820's. there, he could produce and bottle his concoctions along with that of competitors. by the 1830's his rapidly expanding glassworks, located in the town of dyottville, pa., would employ hundreds of highly skilled glassmakers that produced over ten thousand pounds of glass a day. by 1837 the economic depression, coupled with charges of defrauding the community would spell the end to dyott's empire. at the age of 70 years, dyott was sentenced to the eastern state penitentiary. shortly thereafter, his glassworks factory would close and the small town of dyottville was essentially wiped off the map. the glassworks would later be purchased by prominent philadelphia bottler eugene rossel in selling medicines, including the electric bitters, and the new life pills, introduced in 1880 as a cure for stomach ailments. bucklen’s “new discovery” was a medicine for consumption (tuberculosis) a disease which at the time was killing millions of people. many companies offered cures and remedies for consumption — all were frauds, including the “new discovery.” bucklen’s was targeted by samuel hopkins adams in his attack on the patent medicine industry in a series of articles in colliers magazine in 1905. of the ‘new discovery,” adams said: “it is proclaimed to be the ‘only sure cure for consumption.’ further announcement is made that ‘it strikes terror to the doctors.’ as it is a morphine and chloroform mixture, ‘dr. king’s new discovery for consumption’ is well calculated to strike terror to the doctors or to any other class or profession, except, perhaps, the undertakers. it is a pretty diabolical concoction to give to anyone, and particularly to a consumptive. the chloroform the best ingredients and directed as i believe by the hand of providence compounded these medicines so that the narcotic influence of one might be balanced by the other. i commenced using my new discovered medicine with no other hope than handing me gently to the grave.” he not only survived, but got better. after moving his family again to fall river, davis patented four or five inventions but found no backers. an enormous fire consumed 20 acres of fall river in 1843 and davis’s home was obliterated. by the grace of charitable contributions, the davis family relocated to providence, rhode island with only the clothes on their backs, a wagon, and a charred harness. at this point perry davis started to make and sell the pain killer that once saved him from death. while experimenting with the pain killer’s formula with his wife and daughter, davis’s face was terribly burned when a can of alcohol exploded. like many of his time, he had no faith in doctors, and he again used his homemade medicine to recover; he was back at work two weeks later. in the mid-nineteenth century people were not inclined to spend money on quack doctors, and there was no regulation of medicines, but a salesman with a good pitch could convince them to reach into their pockets to buy a product that could alleviate pain. thus davis parked himself near the gates of the 1843 state fairs in pawtucket and taunton. his bottles of perry davis’ pain killer began to sell, and he soon opened a factory on pond street in providence. the pain killer's ingredients were potent, containing a formula of vegetable extracts, camphor, ethyl alcohol, and opiates. davis trademarked the name “pain killer” and never divulged the formula for his product. during the civil war, it was given not only to soldiers but horses. among testimonial to the product was samuel clemens (mark twain), who said, “those who could run away did. those who could not drenched themselves in cholera preventatives and my mother chose perry davis’s pain killer for me.” davis was a portrait of humility and business acumen, giving free samples to baptist missionaries going overseas, and to various causes as his success grew. he donated $36,000 to a new baptist church in 1850, and when he died in providence in 1862, he was mourned by throngs of poor people he’d helped during his schwetzingen, germany. he came to new york in 1848, but it wasn’t until 1854 that gund moved to la crosse, wisconsin. in 1872 he began building the “empire brewery” on south avenue, which had a capacity of 2500 bottles per day. all these buildings were built of limestone taken from the bluffs near la crosse. the brewery produced thirty thousand barrels per year, and had a staff of twenty-five people working for $15 a day. although a large part of the beer was exported, three teams of horses were kept constantly at work in delivering beer throughout the city. the john gund brewing company was organized and incorporated on may 1, 1880. the amount of business being handled by the john gund brewing company increased steadily. additions and improvements were made to the brewery so that by 1897, it covered five acres. in that year 60,000 barrels of beer were brewed, and gund’s beer was shipped all over the region. on september 23, 1897, one of the most disastrous fires in the history of la crosse broke out in the john gund brewing company. luckily, enough beer was recovered so the brewery could continue to fill its orders while it was being rebuilt. john gund said that the brewery would be rebuilt as soon as the debris was cleared away. sure enough the next day, a group of fifty men was on the grounds clearing away rubble and cleaning charred kegs. the new brewery was designed by louis lehle of chicago and finished in august 1898. the plant was larger than the older brewery, furnished with new machinery and equipment, and was fire-proof. it was further enlarged in 1900 and a new bottle washing machine was added. its annual output was, at this point, 25 million bottles. john gund died in 1910. the gund brewing company was the largest brewery in the old northwest, outside of milwaukee. “gund’s peerless” beer was internationally famous. it won a medal and diploma at the paris exposition in 1900, and the gold medal at the louisiana purchase exposition in 1904. a sign advertising gund’s beer was seen in puerto rico during prohibition. by 1910, gund’s brewery employed 450 people. in 1919, prohibition was enacted and the john gund brewing company closed down. but on may 27th of that year, the ruling of a new york judge made possible the manufacture of beer with 2.3- 4% alcohol content, called “war beer.” the gund brewery re-opened and began production of this beer. in 1920, the brewery worker’s union in la crosse went on strike to outlaw open shops (businesses in which both union and non-union men could work). being the largest employer, gund’s was the hardest hit.  later in 1920, complete prohibition closed the john gund brewing company once again. this, along with the strike, proved to be too much, and the gund family packed up and moved east. the city of la crosse thereby lost one of the most important businesses it ever had. the buildings of the gund brewery stand today just south of lutheran hospital on south malt extract\/tonic style bottle designed and bottled\/manufactured for joseph pederson, new york city, ny. the slender body has a slim neck and bore and is finished with a relatively crude applied tapered collar and ring. the finish has a small vertical bubble and concentric marks in the glass. the neck has a long vertical bubble near the finish and a number of smaller bubbles all over. side seams go 3\/4 of the way up the neck. a large open-lined monogram “jsp” is embossed cleanly on the front of the glass. the base is smooth. the bottle would have contained johann hoff’s malt extract, a product that was first introduced in europe in 1847, and sold in america in 1866 by leopold hoff.  in 1868, according to various ads, the business was “transferred” to joseph s. pederson, and a year later became the property of tarrant \u0026amp; company, both based in new york. the malt extract was a medicinal beverage promoted as, \"johann hoff's malt extract (beer of health), a healing remedy cod liver oil medicinal bottles and a cobalt blue w.h.h. soda or mineral water bottle dating to the late 1850's or early 1860's. it is highly likely the vault was \"dipped\" for the first few years of its existence until the installation of a much larger cesspool was installed closer to the residence - perhaps when plumbing was introduced into the house. the exact timeline of events is not exactly known. interestingly, the larger cesspool contains nearly identical building materials and methodologies. the smaller and older privy vault is five feet in diameter with an approximate depth of four feet. the floor was constructed with two inch tongue and groove pine boards with tapered edges for run-off. the vault was reinforced with interlocking pine wood staves secured with a riveted joint wrought iron hoop using tar, pitch or some kind of resin as the adhesive. a badly corroded second hoop was found about 18 inches above the first still tightly affixed to the staves. traces of brick or limestone for \"capping\" the opening was likely used, but removed when the privy was filled in during the 1880's, when a wood framed horse stable was constructed there (later demolished in the 20th century to make way for the pressed concrete \"stone\" garage. the boards were likely cut and assembled at russell's mill, prior to installation. an up\/down saw was used in the fabrication of the floor, based on the distinctive saw markings left by each down-stroke of the blade. no other wood-lined vault discovered or unearthed in the chicago area thus far contained a wood floor, nor are the ones found circular in shape (i.e., most if not all are square, or in a few documented cases, triangular-shaped).  the historically important john kent russell residence (built in 1855) was a remarkable example of an early gable front italianate style cottage employing chicago balloon frame construction, located within chicago's original 1837 city limits. the now-demolished house was considered to be a rare surviving example of architect william belden olmsted, prior to his partnership with john mills osdel (considered chicago's first architect), which together as a design firm, constructed several early chicago buildings prior to the great chicago fire (e.g., tremont house, first chicago city hall, etc). the combination of skill and availability of building materials used to construct russell's early frame house was due largely to the fact that it was built by and for russell, who was a highly trained carpenter, and owner of j.k. russell \u0026amp; co., which was (at the time) a very large supplier of millwork (e.g., brackets, trimwork, doors, etc.) for some of the earliest chicago balloon-frame structures being built before and after the great chicago fire. from the time of construction, the russell house was no doubt outfitted with building materials provided by his company, which likely included the fanciful oversized gabel brackets with \"bullseye\" rondels, turned staircase spindles and newel post, wood fireplace mantel (located on the 2nd floor), paneled doors and impressive built-up moldings and\/or casings used on both the exterior as well as interior. two major alterations (both completed in the 1860's), including the addition of a basement to raise the house to street and\/or sidewalk level to accommodate the installation of a sewer pipe added along carpenter street and a substantial addition built to the west elevation dramatically transformed the house from the time it was first built. in the 1880's, ongoing remodeling was performed before and after the home was subdivided into five separate apartments. the highly outdated tenement was further upgraded or cosmetically altered with the addition of electrical, plumbing and asbestos siding used to cover over the dilapidated clapboard siding. the enclosed rear porch and main entrance were reconfigured, along with the addition of a garage built in the mid-1920's. during its incredibly long and storied existence, the russell house has survived the great chicago fire, the ongoing expansion of the surrounding manufacturing district, the kennedy expressway, urban renewal and the like. amazingly, the residence has been continuously occupied from the time it was built until the present, shortly before urban remains arrived on the site to begin salvaging the original architectural elements before demolition in the summer of 2014. in addition to the careful and documented removal of surviving architectural elements dating to russell's occupancy, urban remains, lead by eric j. nordstrom, painstakingly documented any and all changes the residence underwent over time, to not only gain further insight into its evolution as a single family cottage to a now-dilapidated multi-family dwelling, but ultimately create a more detailed narrative focusing on the exact historical building methods used to construct this non-extant wood frame dwelling. the narrative or survey, in the form of detailed notes and photographic images, along with a large collection of several artifacts gathered will be presented in both exhibition and book in pitting in the body. the base has a high domed kickup. frederick seitz. sr. was born in france in 1801 and emigrated to philadelphia in 1819. he spent a year learning english before moving to easton to establish a brewery with his uncle sebastian and cousin john g. goundie in 1821. the firm of seitz \u0026amp; goundie soon bought land and built a brewery near the delaware river. seitz purchased his partner's share of the brewery two years later. he was initially involved in several endeavors, including farming, distilling and operating a milk route, but he soon focused on industries that augmented his brewery.  first he built a brick malt house on the north side of ferry street. initially bottling was done at the brewery and bottles were marked \"f. seitz.\" one of seitz's claims was that he was the first brewer to bottle beer in pennsylvania (although it is known that beer was bottled in philadelphia in the colonial period and a sealed beer bottle from the late 1820s exists, he was still the earliest brewer to bottle beer in marked bottles of his own mold starting in about 1844 or 1845). seitz also built a bottling works on bushkill street on ground he purchased in 1853.  from this point forward, the bottles were marked seitz \u0026amp; bro. seitz brewed ale, lager beer and porter, at a capacity of 225 barrels a month in 1862 (and 800 barrels by 1866). by 1871 the business was being carried out by seitz’s sons, with three distinct branches (brewing, malting, and bottling). by 1877 the seitz brothers still in the business incorporated as the seitz brewing
