for 1930 (held at princeton university). the book cover, containing a wonderful geometric graphic design supplied by frank lloyd wright, was signed by the architect shortly before his death (provenance provided upon request). the kahn lectures were series of lectures that took place from 1929 to 1931 at the department of art and archaeology of princeton university, sponsored by the new york banker otto hermann kahn (18671934). kahn had funded visits by european scholars to princeton since 1925, and the new lectures were announced as a continuation of the earlier ones. frank lloyd wright was invited by baldwin smith, who was the acting chair of the department of art and archaeology. according to the original donation by otto kahn, each series was to consist of eight lectures, but wright proposed that he would instead hold six lectures and arrange an exhibition of his own recent work \"illustrating the ideas and principles involved in the \"course.\" wright's kahn lectures gave him a new and important experience and even \"opened a new career path\" for the architect, who continued to lecture extensively at universities and other institutions for the next year. his exhibition toured america in 1930 and europe for six months in 1931. wright's lectures were originally published in 1931 in the princeton monograph series for art and archaeology. they were reprinted in 1987, and a new edition, with an introduction by harvard professor neil levine, was published in 2008. in a contemporary review of the first edition of wright's lectures, the critic catherine bauer described the book as \"the very best book on modern architecture that exists\".","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default art deco style depression era american tramp art pyramidal or stepped box","description":"truly stunning art deco depression era american tramp art box comprised of layered wood used from multiple cigar boxes. the stepped or pyramidal shaped box retains the original finish, consisting of a brown textured paint with red enamel accent. artist unknown. found in chicago. \"tramp\" is considered a type of folk art. in america it was primarily made from the end of the civil war through the 1930's. it comes from carving and decorating methods which are much older, originating mostly from germany and scandinavia. \"trampen\" probably refers to the itinerant stages of middle ages craft apprenticeship. the carving techniques were also used for practice. tramp art was spread by soldiers in the civil war, and primarily practiced where there was a plentiful and free supply of materials. it is generally incorrect that this work was done by tramps or hobos as payment for room or meals. there were no rules for constructing the pieces; materials were whatever the carver had available; decorations were whatever he could produce or find. within the context of his own imagination, experience, and abilities, the carver assimilated what he saw with what he had to work with. he then translated and created what he saw into works of art by using his pocketknife and the ever-present cigar box, which was a major factor in the production of tramp art. in the 1850's, the wooden cigar box came into use both in the united states and europe. since it was difficult to ship cigars cheaply and easily for packing into boxes, wherever cigars were made, cigar boxes were made nearby. at the turn of the twentieth century, cigar smoking was at its height because cigars were considered symbols of masculinity and affluence. success bred competition, and competition meant advertising. as a result, cigars were magnificently boxed. revenue laws did not permit the boxes to be used a second time for cigars, so enterprising souls found new uses for the boxes. since the boxes were plentiful and easily carved, ornamenting them by chip carving became popular. this technique of chip carving consisted of notching and layering, with each succeeding layer being a little smaller than the preceding one, to create a pyramidal design. one cigar box or many cigar boxes could be used for the frame of the piece as well as performing the decorative function. either way, the carver had to have a great deal of time and patience to create his finished product. he had to notch-carve each individual piece of wood many times. then he had to layer the individual notch-carved pieces of wood into some kind of recognizable object. one of the most fascinating aspects of tramp art is the evident desire of the carver to produce detailed and often very skilled work with only make-do and simple tools. this layering of piece upon piece was done for decorative purposes, because it was felt that many layers of wood were more interesting than one.","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default majolica glazed tiles are embossed with delicate and curvaceous scrolls with floral accent. the allover lightly crazed glaze surface provides added visual character. the surround was manufactured by the ameican encaustic tile co. in 1874, a man named e.h. hall began tile production under the name of fischer and lansing in zanesville, ohio. american encaustic tiling company (a.e.t.) was founded in 1875. the production of encaustic tiles involves a complicated process in which powdered clays of different colors are pressed together to form a pattern or design. in 1876, hall left a.e.t, to be replaced by a man named gilbert elliot. in 1877, george stanberry became the superintendent, and produced a machine that mass produced tiles like never before in america. production increased, and the factory moved to a bigger building. in 1880, a.e.t. began making glazed tiles; embossed tiles came shortly after in 1881. a showroom was built in new york city around this time. herman mueller was hired in 1887, bringing with him many new techniques. he produced many large relief tiles, as well as panels of female figures, mythological symbols, and portraits. renaissance motifs influenced much of his work. he also produced intaglio-modeled tiles, portraits or scenes in which the design was carved into a tile, then glazed. the glaze darkened in the more deeply carved areas; in the shallow areas, the tones would be more delicate, giving certain tiles the appearance of a photograph. in 1890, a man named karl langenbeck, left rookwood pottery to work with a.e.t. he introduced many new colors to the company. once again, the factory was too small, and a.e.t. moved to a new plant, and was self proclaimed to be the largest tile factory in the entire world. mueller and langenbeck left a.e.t to start their own factory called the mosaic tile company. a man named christian nielson replaced mueller. in the 1890s a.e.t. produced a series of at least eleven printed decal tiles with designs by walter crane, taken directly from the original plates of babys own aesop fables and babys own opera, popular childrens books of the era. in 1913, cecil jones began working at a.e.t, where he became the head of the decoration department. he left in 1930. frederick hurten rhead came in 1917, to be the head of a research department. he created many new designs including painted, molded, and cuenca pieces, as well as some pottery. he stopped working at a.e.t. in 1927. leon v. solon was hired in 1912, and worked there until 1925. in 1932, a.e.t. had some financial problems, and sold off two of their factories. the original plant in zanesville closed in 1935, which was sold to the shawnee pottery company. a company named franklin tile combined with a.e.t. and kept their name. in the 1930s, franklin merged with olean tiles, to create a company called american franklin olean tiles, inc., which sold all of the companies tiles. in 1959, a.e.t acquired olean tile and murray tile company, and 1964 the whole consortium became the american olean tile company. the tiles are free from cracks, chips or any other major imperfections. the opening measures 29 1\/2 x 30 1\/2 inches. division of the lyle culvert company. the machines were built on the pantagraph principle with messages carved or routed approximately 1\/16\" deep in heavy (12 gauge) steel. for the next 21 years, traffic, park, parkway and street name signs were produced by this carved-in-process. in 1928, the sign division was separated from the culvert company. lyle signs, incorporated was established as a separate corporation. in 1933, lyle bought its first embossing press, designed and developed male and female dies to emboss complete sign messages and strengthen borders on 14, 16 and 18 gauge metal, all in one operation. carved-in process signs were still produced because of their extreme longevity, but as years passed, costs of labor (carving one letter at a time) made prices prohibitive. there are, however, carved-in process street name signs still in use in many cities, after 40 or 50 years of service, with only minimum refinishing maintenance costs involved. the demand for embossed message signs gain popularity from 1933 to the start of world war ii, at which time the use of metal for sign purposes was restricted by federal regulations. during the war years, lyle signs used its facilities in the manufacture of defense items, primarily stamping for the aircraft industry. in 1945, federal restrictions on the use of metal for sign purposes was lifted and lyle was back to making traffic and street name signs.","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default
