1883, warren s. johnson, a professor at the state normal school in whitewater, wisconsin, received a patent for the first electric room thermostat. his invention (along with honeywell) helped to launch the building control industry and was the impetus for a new company. johnson and a group of milwaukee investors incorporated the johnson electric service company in 1885 to manufacture, install and service automatic temperature regulation systems for buildings. the company was renamed johnson controls in 1974. between 1885 and 1911, professor johnson delved into many other areas, including electric storage batteries, steam and gas powered automobiles, huge pneumatic tower clocks and wireless telegraph communication. but at his death in 1911, the company decided to focus solely on its temperature control business for nonresidential buildings. johnson controls continued to develop new control technologies to help customers better manage their increasingly larger and more complex buildings. by the 1950's, for example, it was common for a large building to have hundreds of thermostats, valves, dampers and other temperature control devices installed throughout the facility, all of which had to be individually checked several times a day. to improve the efficiency of building operations staff, johnson controls introduced its pneumatic control center, for the first time enabling a building operator to monitor and operate all the temperature control devices in a facility from a single, central site.","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default joseph i, who reigned 1848-1916. the laurel-wearing portrait exhibits detailed linework in the beard and facial features. directly below in diminutive engraver’s lettering is inscribed “j. tautenhayn.\" raised lettering runs concentrically around the entire coin with the german inscription “franz joseph I. kaiser von oesterreich. koenig von boehmen etc. apost. koenig von ungarn” and a single decorative star at the bottom center. the inverse side features a detailed allegorical scene with four figures on a plinth: at right a woman draped in robes stands in front of a globe, holding a torch and touching the hand of a female figure to the left, possibly representative of sculpture and architecture at left, and science and painting at right. a winged man faces right, but looking back, and holds a wreath in the air, as he steps before a machine gear. at right a woman sits with her hand on a shield inscribed with a double-headed eagle crest. above this scene is inscribed “dem fortschritte” (i.e. “the progress”), and at bottom are two lines in exergue \"weltausstellung 1873 \/ wien\" (i.e. world expo 1873 vienna). the same diminutive “j. tautenhayn” can be found at left in the field directly below the figures. the vienna world exposition of 1873 was the first to be held in a german-speaking country. modelled on the great exhibition held at crystal palace, london, in 1851, and subsequent events in london in 1862 and paris, the vienna world exposition was intended to show to the world the industrial and cultural progress of the austro-hungarian empire, and its rapidly expanding and modernising capital city. the nicely aged or patinated medallion was discovered in a historically-important pre-chicago fire german high school constructed in 1869. judging from the location of its discovery, the medallion was likely brought back by a member of the school that attended the exposition. at some point the bronze medal was either lost and\/or forgotten sometime in the 1870's before the german school was disbanded and handed over to the city for their use. the medallion was recovered during the building's demolition, where is was found under a staircase.","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default products were put up in ornately decorated pots, the lids of which are very valuable to collectors now. this particular type of jar was used between 1840-1920 to market various products which came in a paste form. after ww1 they became obsolete as more modern and economical forms of packaging replaced them. after roussel sold bazin his business, he went on to become an important figure in the bottling industry. between 1840-1844 there was an explosion of bottlers, caused largely by the craze for eugene roussel’s bottled soda and mineral waters; in 1838 or 1839 roussel bottled the first syruped soda water, a lemon flavor. he innovated in the taste and quality of bottled waters using his training in a parisian perfumery and lab to invent recipes that were more palatable, with none of the medicinal or bland qualities soda water of the time commonly had. the craze he created was so great that public demand for bottles triggered the reopening of the closed dyottville factories in 1842. roussel is credited as being the first to flavor his waters with fruit juices, or the first to bottle flavored soda water; neither is technically correct, though he is the first to have made a success of it and thus garners credit as the “father of the American bottled soda water industry.”","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default the same distinctive design, with medial and inferior scrolls that nearly touch, and vertical ribbing at the sides. at the flat base is a crude open pontil scar. the curvaceous shape would likely have in the the mckearin historical flask groups, but it is unknown which of the 52 recorded molds this bottle fragment represents. this style of flask was introduced around 1830 and gained extremely popular through the 1840's and 1850's, apparently waning by the beginning of the civil war; it appears that very few if any were made after that time. most scroll flasks were likely made by midwestern glassmakers, though most do not have makers marks to allow for precise attribution (and some were produced in other regions). scroll flasks were fabricated by blowing hot glass into a two piece iron mold. the hinged mold was then opened and the bottle was removed while still attached to the blowpipe. an assistant would then attach a pontil rod to the base of the bottle, and the glass blower could then detach the bottle from its lip by shearing the still soft glass. most often scroll flasks are found with a plain sheared lip. some flasks would receive additional work to finish the mouth and lip. commonly found are the applied band of glass and, infrequently, an applied lip.","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default well-crafted folk art piece is modeled after a wisconsin gas \u0026amp; electric trolleybus that operated in kenosha (and possibly racine), wisconsin during the 1920-30's. unidentified artist. the history of the trolleybus dates back to 29 april 1882, when dr. ernst werner von siemens ran his \"elektromote\" in a berlin suburb. this experimental demonstration continued until june 13, 1882, after which there was little progress in europe, although separate experiments were conducted in the usa. the next development was when lombard grin operated an experimental line at the paris exhibition of 1900 after four years of trials. max schiemann made the biggest step when on july 10, 1901 the world's first passenger-carrying trolleybus operated at bielathal (near dresden), in germany. schiemann built and operated the bielathal system, and is credited with developing the under-running trolley current collection system, with two horizontally parallel overhead wires and rigid trolleypoles spring-loaded to hold them up to the wires. although the bielathal system operated only until 1904, schiemann had developed what is now the standard trolleybus current collection system. in the early days there were a few different methods of current collection. the cedes-stoll system, designed by carl stoll, operated near dresden between 1902 and 1904, and in vienna. the lloyd-khler or bremen system was tried out in bremen, and the filovia was demonstrated near milan. leeds and bradford became the first cities to operate trolleybuses in the united kingdom on june 20, 1911. in the united states, some cities, led by the brooklyn-manhattan transit corporation (bmtnew york), subscribed to the all-four concept of using buses, trolleybuses, streetcars and rapid transit subway and\/or elevated lines, as appropriate, for routes ranging from lightly used to the heaviest trunk line. buses and trolleybuses in particular were seen as entry systems that could later be upgraded to rail as appropriate. although the bmt in brooklyn built only one trolleybus line, other cities, notably san francisco, california, and philadelphia, pennsylvania, built larger systems and still maintain \"all-four\". a number of trolleybus lines in the united states came into existence when a tracked trolley route did not have sufficient ridership to warrant track maintenance or reconstruction. trolleybuses are largely obsolete in the united states. measures 21 x 6 inches. measures 15 inches high at tallest point.","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default salvaged time capsule metal box containing 1893 newspapers stowed in the former german zion's evangelical society church building cornerstone in chicago's ukranian village. the weathered corrugated copper box has a hinged lid without lock or closure system, and retains a colorful patination from exposure to the elements. it contains several folded up newspapers, all dating from august 7, 1893-- including the chicago times, the chicago daily tribune, and the chicago record. the paper itself is badly damaged, worn from age and exposure. the hoyne avenue wesleyan church, originally zion's evangelical society, was built in 1893 and represents one of the earliest churches in the neighborhood. in 1930 the building was sold to the hoyne avenue society of the evangelical church, and sold again in 1951 to the illinois conference of the wesleyan methodist church. it is currently under contract. the neighborhood, ukranian village, is one of chicago's most intact historic residential neighborhoods dating from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. its architectural character is defined by typical chicago building types from that period: worker’s cottages, two- and three-flat buildings, larger apartment buildings and a few high-style single family residences. though these are commonplace building types in the city, ukrainian village stands out for its overall cohesiveness and physical integrity, evidence of careful maintenance by the generations of ethnic immigrants who settled there. though known as ukrainian village, the neighborhood was first settled and built by german immigrants. european immigrants who settled in the city’s neighborhoods clung to religious traditions, and built churches, synagogues and religious-based schools, employing architecture to express faith, ethnic identity and pride, leaving neighborhoods such as ukrainian village with a rich and varied inventory of historic religious architecture. the former st. john evangelical lutheran church and school buildings at 913 – 925 n. hoyne avenue are fine examples of this tradition. the historic and architectural significance of ukrainian village was first recognized in 2002 when a roughly six block area centered on hoyne avenue and thomas street was designated as the ukrainian village chicago landmark district. in 2004 the district was extended southward to include four blocks of walton street, and again in 2006 the district was further expanded to include blocks north and south of walton street.","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default remnants of gold paint, and a raised petal-like patterning. the cup features delicate hand-painted pink and yellow flowers with somewhat faded outlining and branches. around the bottom heel of the mug is a raised petal design, similar to on the mustache dam. a raised ornate branching design is found all over, even overlapping the painted flowers. the cup bears no maker's mark. the moustache cup is a drinking cup with a semicircular ledge inside, with a half moon-shaped opening to allow the passage of liquids. the \"dam\" serves as a guard to keep moustaches dry. moustaches flourished throughout the victorian era and often, moustache wax was applied to facial hair to keep its shape. when steaming hot cups of tea or coffee were carried up to the mouth for sipping the steam melted the wax and sent it right into the cup, or otherwise stained the hairs. mustache cups were popular from 1850 to 1900 when the large, flowing mustache was in style. harvey adams (a potter born in 1835, whose company operated out of longton, staffordshire, england), is acknowledged as having invented the mustache cup in the 1850's to address this problem. the new invention spread all over the european continent and soon, every famous potter was making the new cups. a multiplicity of moustache cups were made by famous manufactories such as meissen, royal crown derby, imari, royal bayreuth, limoges and others. each potter created his own version of this masculine tableware and the news of that invention soon spread to america. although many moustache cups were made in america, the earliest were marked with names which led buyers to believe they were actually manufactured in england. this was due to the popularity of english-made ceramics. therefore, with the exception of the quadruple silver moustache cups made in the u.s., it is nowadays extremely difficult to find an authentic victorian moustache cup bearing an american pottery mark. moreover, between 1920 and 1930, moustaches progressively began to go out of fashion and moustache cup production dwindled.","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default advertising purposes. two years after the first mass-produced picture postal card was developed in austro-hungary by 1870, the first commercial advertisement was sent as a postcard in england. the u.s. government didn't embrace the concept of the postal card until 1872. that year the u.s. postal service issued “pioneer” cards, which had a blank space on the front of the card for the sender's message (the other side was strictly for the address). the first advertising picture \"pioneer\" postcard in the u.s. commemorated the world columbian exposition of 1893 in chicago, and the government issued several other ad cards in the following five years. it wasn’t until 1898 that commercial enterprises were allowed to print their own postcards, and in 1907 divided-back cards created space for a message on the card's reverse. postcards could be mailed for a penny each, so businesses and politicians used the medium as a means to get their messages out, creating the first junk mail. since most of these cards were seen as worthless solicitations and thrown into the trash—just as junk mail now goes directly to the recycling bin—advertising postcards are therefore more valuable today than postcards such as birthday cards or world’s fair souvenirs, which were saved and treasured by recipients. exposition cards in particular, starting with that 1893 world columbian exposition, are incredibly common now. most are view cards portraying the fairgrounds or individual attractions of the world’s fair, which were events held in major cities around the globe to encourage cross-cultural travel, trade, and understanding.","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default paper remains intact and in good condition considering age. the northewestern terra cotta company was founded in chicago in 1877 by a group of investors that included john r. true. the company became a major producer of terra cotta trimmings used by the construction industry. by the beginning of the 20th century, architectural terra cotta was firmly established as america's premier material for detailing commercial structures, especially the new, steel-framed skyscrapers then rising in chicago and new york city. after the devastating chicago fire of 1871, the fireproof qualities of this ancient, baked-clay form propelled its acceptance as a less expensive and lightweight alternative stone. to direct both production and installation, the studio’s draftsmen transformed architectural blueprints into comprehensive \"shop drawings\" that identified exactly where and how each puzzle-like piece would be secured to its supporting structure. favored by such international architectural luminaries as louis h. sullivan, daniel burnham, frank lloyd wright, and albert kahn, the company ultimately contributed to thousands of buildings across the country in a wide array of styles. by the early 1890s, when northwestern terra cotta employed approximately 500 men, annual sales approached $600,000. it was during this era that the company successfully recruited european craftsmen to join the firm as sculptors in its modeling shop. these highly skilled artists could earn three or four times as much as a less skilled laborer at the same factory. by 1910, its large plant at clybourn and wrightwood avenues covered 24 acres and had about 1,000 workers. the popularity of placing terra cotta moldings on building facades peaked in the 1920s, with northwestern terra cotta leading the way, in chicago and around the country. around this time, the company opened plants in st. louis and denver. from the nineteenth century on, prominent chicago architects had extensive contracts with the company; included among the many landmark chicago buildings for which northwestern supplied extensive decorative moldings were the civic opera house, the chicago theater, the wrigley building, and the randolph tower. northwestern terra cotta targeted its client base by advertising in trade journals such as american architect and they wasted no time promoting its involvement in the construction of the distinctive wrigley building—the first skyscraper completely clad \"from sidewalk to searchlight\" in terra cotta. not only was the gleaming white-enamel office tower chicago's tallest structure at that time, it was the first of a series that inaugurated new development north of the chicago river. northwestern's operations in chicago declined alongside the construction industry during the great depression, and was eclipsed by modernist curtain walls of glass, exposed steel, and concrete. in 1965, northwestern terra cotta co.'s only remaining plant in denver closed.","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default the perforated 25 cent admission to king solomons temple. the century of progress exposition was a world's fair venture held over 400 acres of public park space along the shore of lake michigan on chicago's southside, as a showcase of scientific and industrial progress. it included a dozen major palaces and 200 other buildings. the architecture was \"ultramodern\" and a complete departure from the past, following no pattern of former expositions. the fair's motto was \"science finds, industry applies, man adapts\", with its architectural symbol being the sky ride -- a transporter bridge perpedicular to the shore on which one could ride from one side of the fair to the other. the fair buildings were multi-colored to create a \"rainbow city\" as opposed to the \"white city\" of the world's columbian exposition. planning for the design of the exposition began five years prior to the opening day. local architects on the planning committee included edward bennet, john holabird, and hubert burnham. frank lloyd wright was specifically left off the commission due to his inability to work well with others, but did go on to produce three conceptual schemes for the fair. the architectural vision was to avoid reinterpreting past forms, and instead make the fair reflect modern ideas, and suggest future developments. as a result of the fairgrounds being on new man-made land that was owned by the state, the land was initially free from chicago's strict building codes, allowing the architects to explore new materials and techniques in a wide array of experimental buildings.","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default
