these institutions and the experiences of patients. early hospitals were not silent, but were characterized by much conversation and consultation. as religious and reforming institutions, medieval hospitals resonated with the sounds of prayers and sermons. communication within hospitals in the 1700's was conducted through the use of bells, a separate bell having announced emergencies, meals and the start of church services. hospital rules were also read to patients on the wards on a daily basis into the victorian period. such rules were equally concerned with regulating the sounds of patients. there were restrictions on talking and family visits. from the 1700's, european hospitals also isolated people who appeared to be delirious or have mental illnesses. with the introduction of anaesthesia, surgery was no longer accompanied by the screams of patients in pain. new materials and architectural designs also aimed to minimize noise. the noises outside institutions were also controlled and reduced. originally built on the edges of cities, hospitals were drawn into the heart of communities as urban centers grew throughout the 1800's. speed limits were imposed on vehicles around hospitals, and streets were covered in straw to minimize the sound of carts and pedestrians. with the introduction of electricity in the late 1800's, bells inside hospitals were replaced with soundless call buttons. silence was considered crucial to a patient’s recovery. signs outside many contemporary hospitals remind the public that hospitals have become quiet cornerstone commenced on july 4th, 1905). built at a cost of nearly a million dollars, the hospital was considered the most modern and best equipped in the city during time of construction. the building itself was six stories in height, constructed of solid masonry, steel and tile, with the most approved \"system of heating, lighting and ventilation.\" the interior originally accommodated 240 beds, included sixty private rooms. there were three operating rooms , along with special provisions for isolating patients in the surgical, medical gynecological and maternity departments. the hospital was designed by the architectural firm of schmidt and garden and martin. although known primarily for their commercial and industrial designs, the firm also designed several residential buildings, more than 300 hospitals and a few public structures. richard ernest schmidt studied architecture at the massachusetts institute of technology and worked for a number of architects (adolph cudell and charles sumner frost) before starting his own practice in 1887. eight years later, he asked hugh gorden garden to join him as chief of design. a native of toronto, canada, garden had moved to chicago in the late-1880's, apprenticing with several architectural firms, including flanders \u0026amp; zimmerman, henry ives cobb, and shepley, rutan \u0026amp; coolidge. he then became a freelance renderer, which brought him jobs with howard van doren shaw, louis sullivan, and frank lloyd wright. in 1906, the schmidt-garden partnership was formalized under the name of richard e. schmidt, garden \u0026amp; martin. the third partner was edgar d. martin, who later joined the firm of pond \u0026amp; pond. schmidt brought business acumen and social connections to the partnership, while garden brought the imagination, inventiveness, and sensitivity of a creative designer and versatile draftsman. martin was an extremely skilled structural engineer who was able to solve technical problems associated with large industrial buildings and modern materials, such as the montgomery ward \u0026amp; co. catalog house, one of the first buildings to be constructed of reinforced concrete. garden helped evolve the firm's progressive approach to design, much in the way that his contemporaries, sullivan and wright, had done. the style and details of garden's architectural designs were so government bureaucracies designed to regulate them. in the early part of the century paper was more expensive, but advances in paper production made this once-precious commodity inexpensive enough to waste. some of the earliest office waste paper baskets of the 19th century were made of rattan (derived from parts of palm trees) and imported from china. others were woven from wicker (plaited lengths of willow or osier), shipped from germany and then assembled by german craftsmen in the united states. that led to the import of german baskets to the united states, “direct from the great basket industries along the beautiful valley of the thueringer forests,” as one ad from 1905 read. world war i, however, ended such imports, which allowed a willow-weaving industry to blossom in baltimore and parts of upstate new york. standard wicker office baskets consisted of a round base (relatively few were square) anchoring vertical, plaited willow stakes, each of which was held an equal distance apart from the next by two to four horizontal rings. usually a twined ring of heavier willow or rattan would crown the basket’s opening, providing structural support for the basket overall, while also giving basket craftsmen an armature for handles. wicker office baskets are distinctive for their open architecture, revealing the crumpled first drafts of letters or expired contracts inside, but some wicker or rattan baskets were woven tight, keeping the accumulation of a day’s failures discretely hidden from view. this reliance on natural materials is surprising when you consider how easily wicker baskets burned. cigars or matches carelessly tossed in bone-dry wicker baskets full of paper regularly set off infernos, sometimes burning entire buildings to the ground. thus, a market for metal waste baskets developed, some of which touted their resistance to flames. for example, in 1914, the metal office furniture company patented a fireproof waste basket called the victor that was made of sheets of steel—oddly to contemporary eyes, it was painted to resemble wood, since that was still the prevailing aesthetic of the day. in the first decades of the 20th century, other companies like andrews wire and iron works of rockford, illinois, and massillon wire basket co. of ohio produced, as their names suggest, wire baskets, while in the 1920s, nemco (northwestern expanded metal company) of chicago made wire-like baskets that were actually made of perforated metal sheets that resembled wire when mechanically expanded and shaped. nemco baskets were famously flared at the top, and sometimes had bulbous middles, giving them what legrand calls a “foxglove” appearance, named for the shape of the flower. in keeping of the office décor of that era,
