historically-important gethsemane missionary baptist church, located in the maxwell neighborhood of chicago. the seating was likely installed in the late 1920's. the original plush cushions with colorful mohair cloth was very much intact and in great shape, considering age. the seat end contains a uniform brushed mental finish sealed with a clear coat lacquer. there is a strong possibility that the seating was a "transplant" from a chicago theater being renovated or demolished around the time of installation (hence, the metallic gold finish). perhaps when the seats were brought over to the church they were painted and reupholstered (there are actually two mohair cloth covers with distinct patterns). despite being largely intact, there was significant mold on the seating. the seat end contains two opposed female heads with flowing hair, flanking the centrally located panel featuring a centrally located embossed cornucopia. the original solid birch wood armrest is intact and tightly affixed to the seat end. several matching left and right seat ends available. the two and a half story pre-fire chicago brick building located at 1352 s. union street is one of the few buildings left standing after the wrecking ball, driven by urban renewal, destroyed nearly all of the maxwell street neighborhood in chicago. constructed as a private, german-speaking high school in 1869 (also served the neighboring zion evenagelical church - since demolished), it later became home to a romanian synagogue, an african-american church, and then briefly an arts center. designed by german architect augustus bauer (st. patrick’s church, tree studios), the german school (the city's first) is the only surviving example of bauer's work as a solo architect. the non-religious school was built of brick and stone with an interior containing six great recitation rooms. a small time capsule was placed inside a small vault within the original building cornerstone. by the turn of the century a romanian jewish congregation moved in, and converted the building into a synagogue in 1905. when the jewish congregation later moved to west to lawndale, the building became gethsemane missionary baptist church (established in 1935) with an african american congregation lead by reverend a. sharp. several alterations to the interior and exterior were made during this time, which included an apartment constructed in the rear of the building (1944) for reverend sharp to occupy, along with a newly-built facade in completed in 1945. the building remained in use as the gethsemane missionary baptist until 2002 as the last remaining protestant church in the maxwell street district. in addition, the church is the only extant building in the area that survived the great chicago fire of 1871 (and one of only 112 documented, pre-fire buildings still standing in chicago today) as of 2008, the church building has sat vacant. the seat ends are priced individually. each painted f. corbin company, chicago, ills. the doorknob features stepped concentric rings. the rectangular-shaped backplate has a sunken border accentuated with a baked black enamel. the office door hardware retains the original nickel-plated finish. both knob and backplate are comprised of bronze. the art deco style chicago board of trade building is located at 141 w. jackson boulevard at the foot of the lasalle street canyon in downtown chicago. the 141 w. jackson address hosted the former tallest building in chicago designed by william w. boyington before the current holabird & root structure, which held the same title for over 35 years until being surpassed in 1965 by the richard j. daley center. in 1925, the chicago board of trade commissioned holabird & root to design the current building, with hegeman & harris as general contractors. clad in gray indiana limestone and topped with a copper pyramid roof, the art deco-styled building opened on june 9, 1930. the chicago board of trade has operated continuously on its twelfth floor since the 1930 opening, dedicating 19,000 square feet to what was then the world's largest trading floor. the advent of steel frame structural systems allowed completely vertical construction; but as with many skyscrapers of the era, the exterior was designed with multiple setbacks at increasing heights, which served to allow additional light into the ever-deepening concrete valleys in urban cores. at night, the setbacks are upwardly lit by floodlights, further emphasizing the structure's vertical elements. the night illumination design was a common contemporary chicago architectural theme, seen also in the wrigley building, the jewelers building, the palmolive building, the lasalle-wacker building, and the tribune tower. interior decoration includes polished surfaces throughout, the use of black and white marble, prominent vertical hallway trim, and an open three-story lobby which at the time of opening housed the world's largest light fixture. known for its work on the brooklyn bridge, the family-operated factory of john a. roebling supplied all of the cables used in the building's 23 otis elevators. although the building was commissioned for the chicago board of trade, its first tenant was the quaker oats company, which moved in on may 1, 1930.sculptural work by alvin meyer, the one-time head of holabird & root's sculpture department, is prominent on the building's façade, and represents the trading activities within. on each side of the exterior clock facing lasalle street are hooded figures, an egyptian holding grain, and a native american holding corn. similar figures are repeated at the uppermost corners of the central tower, just below the sloping roof. above street level, representations of bulls protrude directly from the limestone cladding on the building's north side and to a lesser degree on the east side, a reference to a bull market. the central structure is capped by a 6,500 pound, 31 ft. tall aluminum statue of the roman goddess of grain, ceres, holding a sheaf of wheat in the left hand and a bag of corn in the right hand, as a nod to the exchange's heritage as a commodities market. this statue was assembled from 40 pieces. as it is near the forty-five story point, sculptor john h. storrs believed that no other building would be tall enough for the inhabitants to clearly see the statue's face, and therefore it was left blank. priced for a single doorknob and matching backplate.
vendor-unknown
Default locomotive was a 1,500-horsepower b-b freight- and passenger-hauling diesel locomotive produced between july 1945 and february 1949 by general motors’ electro-motive division. final assembly was located at the la grange, illinois plant. a total of 1,111 cab-equipped lead a units and 696 cabless booster b units were built. the f3 was the third model in gm-emd's highly successful f-unit series of cab unit diesel locomotives, and it was the second most produced of the series. the f3 essentially differed from the emd f2 in that it used the “new” d12 generator to produce more power, and from the later emd f7 in electrical equipment. some late-model f3s had the same d27 traction motors used in the f7, and were nicknamed f5 models. as built, the only way to distinguish between the f2 and f3 was the nose number panels on the a units, which were small on the f2 and large on the f3 and subsequent locomotives. early versions of the f3 had the "chicken wire" grilles along the top edge of the carbody. later production featured a distinctive stamped stainless steel grille. all f-units introduced after the ft have twin exhaust stacks and four radiator fans arranged close together atop their roofs, unlike the ft's four stacks and separated pairs of fans. eleven f3s survive today at a variety of museums; nine are a units, while two are b units. very few of the surviving f3 units remain unmodified from their original appearance and specifications. measures 21 x 12 x 2 1/2 inches.
vendor-unknown
Default roller-skating rink, pony rides, baseball games (with a grandstand) and live music by popular entertainers of the time. trains brought crowds from milwaukee, chicago and other surrounding areas from memorial day to labor day. when the amusement park closed in 1949, the facilities were bulldozed, and the property developed into a sprawling residential landscape. a circular concrete structure that intact watercolor rendering completed for joseph hussa, a czechoslovakian brewmaster trained in prague, who established the hussa brewery in bangor, wisc. during the mid-19th century. in 2008, the existing building built for the brewery throughout the 19th and 20th century were demolished. the hussa brewery drinking or sampling room, possibly located in or around the brewery's offices was designed by odin j. oyen. murals depictng historic images of the brewery were designed above the door and wood paneling or wainscoting. the polychromtatic architectural waltercolor rendering (signed) was executed by odin j. oyen. the oyen decorating firm traces its roots to company founder odin j. oyen, who arrived in the city of la crosse, wisconsin at the suggestion of ori sorensen (of sorensen and davis contractors) in february of 1888. the opportunity in la crosse for a painter and interior decorator was seemingly unlimited during around this time period in the late 19th century. the upper midwest building boom of the 1880's and 1890's was well underway - fueled in part by the immense profits generated from the lumber industry. wealthy lumber barons across wisconsin and minnesota were rapidly building large mansions that often required extravagant interior decoration. at the same time, newly-built churches (and many existing ones) were undergoing interior remodeling, including scenic and symbolic wall murals, stenciling and other design applications. additionally, courthouses and other civic buildings were being constructed to serve the new communities formed from immigrants and travelers moving west for new employment opportunities. recognizing the need for a wide clientele, odin j. oyen quickly became involved in bidding on several contracts for these large public buildings, residences, churches and even movie theaters throughout the upper midwest. as his design firm rapidly grew to national prominence, oyen found it necessary to devote more of his time to the business aspects of his decorating firm, which included the formation of a talented staff of artisans to execute the commissions he was securing. oyen drew on the talents of skilled european artisans migrating to america for executing several of the commissions he was awarded. around 1895, he hired his first full time artist-designer joseph erickson, who was born and trained in norway. oyen had met erickson in chicago - possibly at the world's columbian exposition, while working on one of the fair's buildings. the continued growth of the oyen firm demanded a larger and more prestigious location to conduct business. on december 1, 1895, the firm moved to 114 south fourth street, where later the firm added a third floor to the existing building to accommodate his need for additional studio space. the first floor of the extant building is now a restaurant, but the second and third floors remain largely unchanged from oyen's time. in 1902, looking for opportunities to continually broaden his business operation, oyen purchased a sign and bill-posting company, calling it the oyen-ad sign system. this newly developed ad-sign system purportedly controlled the outdoor advertising space within 500 miles of la crosse, wisc., and with it, gave oyen an additional opportunity to place his name before the public. a coca-cola contract for outdoor advertising (e.g., large advertisements were painted on the sides of buildings) provided the sign company with most of the upper midwest territory for advertisement sign boards promoting this brand. in 1903, axel edward soderberg was hired as the firm's primary artist, who would go on to execute the majority of the firm's interior installations (e.g., painted murals, etc.) throughout the early 20 century. oyen enticed soderberg away from andrews decorating company of clinton, iowa, who was his chief rival in this area. another important contract was secured around 1912, when oyen was responsible for decorating the friedman brothers and finklestein and ruben theaters (both firms had offices located in the minneapolis and st. paul). the oyen firm was for designed the interiors of these theatres beginning around 1912 through 1925. another pivotal moment occurred during the fall of 1912, when odin j.oyen firm's constructed a new building (located at 507 main street) that housed a showroom, offices and an art studio on the top floor. interestingly, odin j. oyen was heavily involved in the building's overall design, perhaps influenced by his exposure to various commercial structures popular in new york during this time period. the extant building is essentially, a composite of three different buildings odin had observed in numerous architectural record magazines. oyen's friend, the local architect percy dwight bentley, gave the design its physical form. the new oyen building, illustrated in the november 1913 western architect, is stone faced on the first story with brick above. the projecting cornice consists of a unique assemblage of green glazed terra cotta tiles and painted wood brackets. the site at 507 main street was originally purchased from wm. doerflinger and j. c. toeller for $9,000. the building's exterior facade and interior floor plans remain largely intact to this day. the oyen firm continued to prosper well into the 1920's until the death of the company's founder, who died of lung cancer on july 31, 1926. the business continued on under the name "odin j. oyen studios" for less than a decade under the direction of his son, leighton oyen and brother louis oyen. the depression years coupled with the untimely death of louis oyen in 1931, contributed to the decline and eventual closing of the oyen firm.
vendor-unknown
Default medium-sized porcelain insulators units were salvaged from the interior of an old chicago factory that specialized in the fabrication of transmission drives, friction clutch pulleys and other heavy machinery. the insulator units contain cast iron perforated bracket hoods with large eye hooks affixed to the undersides. the two insulators were still being used with a very high voltage electric system requiring this type of insulator. the first electrical systems to make use of insulators were telegraph lines; direct attachment of wires to wooden poles was found to give very poor results, especially during damp weather. the first glass insulators used in large quantities had an unthreaded pinhole. these pieces of glass were positioned on a tapered wooden pin, vertically extending upwards from the pole's crossarm (commonly only two insulators to a pole and maybe one on top of the pole itself). natural contraction and expansion of the wires tied to these "threadless insulators" resulted in insulators unseating from their pins, requiring manual reseating. the first to produce ceramic insulators were companies in the united kingdom, with stiff and doulton using stoneware from the mid 1840's, joseph bourne (later renamed denby) producing them from around 1860 and bullers from 1868. utility patent number 48,906 was granted to louis a. cauvet on july 25, 1865 for a process to produce insulators with a threaded pinhole. to this day, pin-type insulators still have threaded pinholes. the cast iron components have been brushed down to bare metal and sealed the flat base is a crude open pontil scar and seams from a key hinge mold. the curvaceous shape is finished with a crude sheared lip that exhibits stretch marks down the neck and an open bubble on the interior bore. there are 52 molds of scroll flasks recorded in the mckearin historical flask groups, with this flask likely representing a variation of gix-10. this style of flask was introduced around 1830 and gained extremely popular through the 1840's and 1850's, apparently waning by the beginning of the civil war; it appears that very few if any were made after that time. most scroll flasks were likely made by midwestern glassmakers, though most do not have makers marks to allow for precise attribution (and some were produced in other regions). scroll flasks were fabricated by blowing hot glass into a two piece iron mold. the hinged mold was then opened and the bottle was removed while still attached to the blowpipe. an assistant would then attach a pontil rod to the base of the bottle, and the glass blower could then detach the bottle from its lip by shearing the still soft glass. most often scroll flasks are found with a plain sheared lip. some flasks would receive additional work to finish the mouth and lip. commonly found are the applied band of glass and, infrequently, an applied lip.
vendor-unknown
Default
