was asked to design the interior and furniture for the lumber industries house. the chicago world’s fair brought hoffmann to the attention of the howell co., headquartered in geneva, illinois (later, poster designed by french poster modernist jean carlu for the division of information, office for emergency management, washington, d.c. "give 'em both barrels" is a superlative example of the smaller format, showing a highly stylized riveter and machine gunner each contributing their part to the war effort. produced in the same year that roosevelt signed the lend-lease act to help supply britain and the allies with goods and weaponry, this propaganda poster was created to inspire the american workers to a greater level of productivity to help defeat the nazi regime. carlu's trademark minimalist style eschews the heavy-handed design of many other propaganda pieces of the times. after wwii broke out, posters were aimed to mobilize sentiment and drum up war support. recalling the uncle sam poster, propaganda graphic visuals were often pictorial, relying on familiar conventions of realistic illusion. however, flat and bold imagery also functioned symbolically. jean carlu started his career as a professional poster-designer in 1919, after a competition by a producer of dental aids (glycodont) in 1918. from 1919 until 1921 he served as an illustrator, after which he worked at an agency that designed advertisements. in that period he designed his first poster in art deco style (for the kid by charlie chaplin). he was attracted by cubism and by the works of juan gris and albert gleizes. he was one of the first who realized that to fix a trademark in the minds of consumers, a process involving schematic forms and expressive colors needs to be applied. these very characteristics gave his posters and other works their distinguishable quality. the poster remains in excellent condition, with a little toning and handling wear. free from u.s. government folds hit, and when the los angeles stock exchange opened its doors there in 1931, the country was deep into the depression. there are three bas-relief panels carved by salvatore cartaino scarpitta into the and comprised of bronze with polished chrome plated finish. the sink remains in excellent condition, considering age. the georgian revival style allen loeb mansion, located at 1427 waverly road (highland park, il.), was completed in 1929. the 10,200 square foot stately residence was designed by the architectural firm of walcott and work, although there is strong evidence that arthur heun may have initiated the original design. typical georgian revival homes are stately, rectangular, and often sheathed in red brick. this style was generally popular in the u.s. for estate houses from the turn of the century until the depression. a georgian facade is symmetrical and often emphasized by a pedimented projecting pavilion. sometimes the front entrance, which is typically located in the center of the pavilion, is surrounded by a one story, columned porch. a palladian window (three part window with a round arched sash in the center, flanked by two, often shorter, double hung sash) may be found above the pavilion. other classical details, such as dentils, modillions, and pilasters are prevalent. the partnership of russell walcott and robert work began in 1928 and lasted until 1936. as prominent area architects, they did extensive work on the north shore and had housing designs featured in national publications, including the russell kelly house in lake forest that was photographed in a november, 1931 edition of house & garden. jens jensen designed the surrounding landscape around the loeb residence and the neighboring home (as the houses changed hands over the years, subsequent owners wanted individual identities for their properties and removed much of the jensen landscape elements). the sprawling mansion with adjoining carriage house is comprised of hand-cut roman style limestone brick with a slate roof and spacious parking court. in interior featured paneled rooms, marble fireplaces, crystal chandeliers and a walk-in safe in the basement. allen loeb and his brother (who built a neighboring mansion that same year) were real estate and investment experts. together, they owned the non-extant chicago arena in downtown chicago, which was a riding stable and ice arena. in 1954 the arena was converted into cbs studios, where the first presidential debate was held. in 2009 the building was demolished. urban remains worked in conjunction with the wrecker to remove exterior and interior architectural elements. ernest and allen were the older brothers of richard loeb, who was found guilty in the murder of bobbie franks in 1924. at the time, the loeb family lived in the kenwood neighborhood in chicago. their father, albert loeb, was vice president of sears and was considered next‐in‐line to become the president. following the publicity of the murder, however, the family moved to highland park and albert died shortly afterward. the former owners of the house renovated the kitchen in 1973 and added a pool building onto the east side of the largest technical school in lyon. their father, claude-antoine lumire, ran a photographic firm and both brothers worked for him: louis as a physicist and auguste as a manager. louis had made some improvements to the still-photograph process, the most notable being the dry-plate process, which was a major step towards moving images. it was not until their father retired in 1892 that the brothers began to create moving pictures. they patented a number of significant processes leading up to their film camera - most notably film perforations (originally implemented by emile reynaud) as a means of advancing the film through the camera and projector. the cinmatographe itself was patented on february 13, 1895 and the first footage ever to be recorded using it was recorded on march 19, 1895. this first film shows workers leaving the lumire factory. the brothers stated that "the cinema is an invention without any future" and declined to sell their camera to other filmmakers such as georges mlis. consequently, their role in the history of film was exceedingly brief. they turned their attentions to colour photography and in 1903 they patented a colour photography process, the "autochrome lumire", launched on the market in 1907. throughout much of the 20th century, the lumire company was a major producer of photographic products in europe, but the brand name, lumire, disappeared from the marketplace following its merger with ilford.
vendor-unknown
Default 1931 antique american streamlined style art deco interior lobby chrysler building doorknob designed and fabricated by the p. & f. corbin company, new britain, ct. the simple, yet elegantly designed doorknob is comprised of cast bronze metal with a nickel-plated finish. the doorknob contains concentric rings in a stepped or tapered fashion. a portion of the original threaded spindle remains intact. the doorknob was removed, along with light fixtures, additional hardware and other furnishings when the building was renovated beginning in the 1940's. the depression era new york city chrysler building is considered by many contemporary architects to be one of the finest buildings in new york city, and in 2007, was ranked ninth on the list of america's favorite architecture by the american institute of architects. the historically important art deco skyscraper is located on the east side of manhattan in the turtle bay area at the intersection of 42nd street and lexington avenue. standing at a height of 1,046 feet, the structure was the world's tallest building for 11 months before it was surpassed by the empire state building in 1931. however, it is still remains the tallest brick building in the world, albeit with an internal steel skeleton. the building was the headquarters of the chrysler corporation from 1930 until the mid-1950's. although the building was built and designed specifically for the car manufacturer, the corporation did not pay for the construction of it and never owned it, as walter p. chrysler decided to pay for it himself, so that his children could inherit it. the chrysler building was designed by architect william van alen for a project of walter p. chrysler. when the ground breaking occurred on september 19, 1928, there was an intense competition in new york city to build the world's tallest skyscraper. despite a frantic pace (the building was built at an average rate of four floors per week), no workers died during the construction of this skyscraper. van alen's original design for the skyscraper called for a decorative jewel-like glass crown. it also featured a base in which the showroom windows were tripled in height and topped by 12 stories with glass-wrapped corners, creating an impression that the tower appeared physically and visually light as if floating in mid-air. the height of the skyscraper was also originally designed to be 807 feet. however, the design proved to be too advanced and costly for building contractor william h. reynolds, who disapproved of van alen's original plan. the design and lease were then sold to walter p. chrysler, who worked with van alen and redesigned the skyscraper for additional stories; it was eventually revised to be 925 feet tall. as walter chrysler was the chairman of the chrysler corporation and intended to make the building into chrysler's headquarters, various architectural details and especially the building's gargoyles were modeled after chrysler automobile products like the hood ornaments of the plymouth; they exemplify the machine age in the 1920's. construction commenced on september 19, 1928. in total, almost 400,000 rivets were used and approximately 3,826,000 bricks were manually laid, to create the non-load-bearing walls of the skyscraper. contractors, builders and engineers were joined by other building-services experts to coordinate construction. prior to its completion, the building stood about even with a rival project at 40 wall street, designed by h. craig severance. severance increased the height of his project and then publicly claimed the title of the world's tallest building. in response, van alen obtained permission for a 125 foot long spire and had it secretly constructed inside the frame of the building. the spire was delivered to the site in four different sections. on october 23, 1929, the bottom section of the spire was hoisted onto the top of the building's dome and lowered into the 66th floor of the building. the other remaining sections of the spire were hoisted and riveted to the first one in sequential order in just 90 minutes.

upon completion, may 20, 1930, the added height of the spire allowed the chrysler building to surpass 40 wall street as the tallest building in the world and the eiffel tower as the tallest structure. it was the first man-made structure to stand taller than 1,000 feet. van alen's satisfaction in these accomplishments was likely muted by walter chrysler's later refusal to pay the balance of his architectural fee. less than a year after it opened to the public on may 27, 1930, the chrysler building was surpassed in height by the empire state building, but the chrysler building is still the world's tallest steel-supported brick building.

the east building wall of the base out of which the tower rises runs at a slant to the manhattan street grid, following a property line that predated the commissioners' plan of 1811. the land on which the chrysler building stands was donated to the cooper union for the advancement of science and art in 1902. the land was originally leased to william h. reynolds, but, when he was unable to raise money for the project, the building and the development rights to the land were acquired by walter p. chrysler in 1928. contrary to popular belief, the chrysler corporation was never involved in the construction or ownership of the chrysler building, although it was built and designed for the corporation and served as its headquarters until the mid-1950's. it was a project of walter p. chrysler for his children.

the chrysler building is considered a leading example of art deco architecture. the corners of the 61st floor are graced with eagles; on the 31st floor, the corner ornamentation are replicas of the 1929 chrysler radiator caps. the building is constructed of masonry, with a steel frame, and metal cladding. the building currently contains a total of 3,862 windows on its facades. inside, there are four banks of 8 elevators designed by the otis elevator corporation. the building was declared a national historic landmark in 1976, and a new york city landmark in 1978. the chrysler building is also renowned and recognized for its terraced crown. composed of seven radiating terraced arches, van alen's design of the crown is a cruciform groin vault constructed into seven concentric members with transitioning setbacks, mounted up one behind another. the stainless-steel cladding is ribbed and riveted in a radiating sunburst pattern with many triangular vaulted windows, transitioning into smaller segments of the seven narrow setbacks of the facade of the terraced crown. the entire crown is clad with silvery "enduro ka-2" metal, an austenitic stainless steel developed in germany by krupp and marketed under the trade name "nirosta" (a german acronym for nichtrostender stahl, meaning "non-rusting steel"). when the building first opened, it contained a public viewing gallery on the 71st floor, which was closed to the public in 1945. this floor is now the highest occupied floor of the chrysler building, it was occupied by an office space management firm in 1986. the private cloud club occupied a three-floor high space from the 66th–68th floors, but closed in the late 1970s. above the 71st floor, the stories of the building are designed mostly for exterior appearance, functioning mainly as landings for the stairway to the spire. these top stories are very narrow with low, sloped ceilings, and are useful only for holding radio-broadcasting and other mechanical and electrical equipment.
vendor-unknown
Default chicago's southside, as a showcase of scientific and industrial progress. it included a dozen major palaces and 200 other buildings. the architecture was "ultramodern" and a complete departure from the past, following no pattern of former expositions. the fair's motto was "science finds, industry applies, man adapts", with its architectural symbol being the sky ride -- a transporter bridge perpedicular to the shore on which one could ride from one side of the fair to the other. the fair buildings were multi-colored to create a "rainbow city" as opposed to the "white city" of the world's columbian exposition. planning for the design of the exposition began five years prior to the opening day. local architects on the planning committee included edward bennet, john holabird, and hubert burnham. frank lloyd wright was specifically left off the commission due to his inability to work well with others, but did go on to produce three conceptual schemes for the fair. the architectural vision was to avoid reinterpreting past forms, and instead make the fair reflect modern ideas, and suggest future developments. as a result of the fairgrounds being on new man-made land that was owned by the state, the land was initially free from chicago's strict building codes, allowing the architects to explore new materials and techniques in a wide array of experimental buildings.
vendor-unknown
Default
