preserved in a varnished oak wood frame. the american railway association (ara) was an industry trade group representing railroads in the united states. the organization had its inception in meetings of general managers and ranking railroad operating officials known as time table conventions, the first of which was held on october 1, 1872, at louisville, kentucky. in 1875, the group changed its name to general time convention and in october 1892, to american railway association. in january 1919, ten separate groups of operating officers were amalgamated with the association and carried on their activities as divisions, sections or committees of the larger group. on october 12, 1934, the ara ceased to exist, having joined with several other railroad industry trade groups to merge into the association of american railroads.","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default early 20th century ornamental bronze-plated reclining erotic female woolworth building souvenir or advertising piece","description":"rare and unusual early 20th century american woolworth building souvenir or advertising piece fabricated by the jennings brothers foundry, bridgeport, conn. the skillfully cast souvenir is comprised of cast zinc or pewter with original bronze-plated finish. features a reclining full figure female with bonnet and nightgown. a small plaque with fanciful border features the woolworth building with surrounding cityscape. the nightgown consists of two hinged plates used to conceal the bare-breasted woman in erotic pose. the woolworth building, at 57 stories, is one of the oldest skyscrapers in new york city. more than a century after the start of its construction, it remains one of the fifty tallest buildings in the united states as well as one of the twenty tallest buildings in new york city. since 1966 it has been a national historic landmark. the woolworth building was constructed in neo-gothic style by architect cass gilbert, who was commissioned by frank woolworth in 1910 to design the new corporate headquarters on broadway, between park place and barclay street in lower manhattan, opposite city hall. the construction cost was us$13.5 million and woolworth paid all of it in cash. on completion, the woolworth building overtook the metropolitan life insurance company tower as the world's tallest building; it opened on april 24, 1913. with a resemblance to european gothic cathedrals, the structure was labeled the cathedral of commerce by the reverend s. parkes cadman during the opening ceremony. it remained the tallest building in the world until the construction of 40 wall street and the chrysler building in 1930; an observation deck on the 57th floor attracted visitors until 1945. the building's tower, flush with the main frontage on broadway, is raised on a block base with a narrow interior court for light. the exterior decoration was cast in limestone-colored, glazed architectural terra-cotta panels. strongly articulated piers, carried—without interrupting cornices—right to the pyramidal cap, give the building its upward thrust. the gothic detailing concentrated at the highly visible top is massively scaled, able to be read from the street level several hundred feet below. the ornate, cruciform lobby has a vaulted ceiling, mosaics, and sculpted caricatures that include gilbert and woolworth. woolworth's private office, revetted in marble in french empire style, is preserved. engineers gunvald aus and kort berle designed the steel frame, supported on massive caissons that penetrate to the bedrock. the high-speed elevators were innovative, and the building's high office-to-elevator ratio made the structure profitable.","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default notable wpa graphic originally contained bold black and white lettering against a background containing red, white and blue stripes. surface wear consistent with age. the oversized sign contains multiple bullet holes and markings along the edges left by a wood frame removed long ago. the works progress administration (renamed in 1939 as the work projects administration; wpa) was the largest and most ambitious new deal agency, employing millions of unemployed people (mostly unskilled men) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads. the project was created by order of president franklin delano roosevelt, and funded by congress with passage of the emergency relief appropriation act of 1935 on april 8, 1935. the wpa was largely shaped by harry hopkins, close adviser to president roosevelt. the wpa was initially intended to be an extension of the federal emergency relief administration work program, which funded projects run by states and cities. many were for infrastructure, such as bridges, roads and parks, but they also included archeological excavations of significant sites, the historic american buildings survey (habs), and other historic preservation activities. both roosevelt and hopkins believed that the route to economic recovery and the lessened importance of \"the dole\" would be in employment programs such as the wpa. almost every community in the united states had a new park, bridge or school constructed by the agency. the wpa's initial appropriation in 1935 was for $4.9 billion (about 6.7 percent of the 1935 gdp), and in total it spent $13.4 billion. at its peak in 1938, it provided paid jobs for three million unemployed men. headed by harry hopkins, the wpa provided jobs and income to the unemployed during the great depression in the united states. between 1935 and 1943, the wpa provided almost eight million jobs. full employment, which emerged as a national goal around 1944, was not the wpa goal. it tried to provide one paid job for all families in which the breadwinner suffered long-term unemployment. the wpa was a national program that operated its own projects in cooperation with state and local governments, which provided 10%-30% of the costs. wpa sometimes took over state and local relief programs that had originated in the reconstruction finance corporation or federal emergency relief administration programs. liquidated on june 30, 1943, as a result of low unemployment due to the worker shortage of world war ii, the wpa provided millions of americans with jobs for 8 years. most people who needed a job were eligible for at least some of its positions. hourly wages were typically set to the prevailing wages in each area. but, workers could not be paid for more than 30 hours a week. before 1940, to meet the objections of the labor unions, the programs provided very little training to teach new skills to workers.","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default rare original american depression era c. 1930′s wpa-era ornamental cast iron west side elevated highway surface mount emblematic rondel or plaque","description":"historically important and highly sought after early 1930′s oversized ornamental cast iron works progress administration emblematic rondel or plaque salvaged from the old new york city west side elevated highway torn down during the 1970′s. the impressive well-documented wpa-era plaque features the official seal of the city of new york in very deep relief. the exact foundry or fabricator is not known. the single-sided plaque contains a brushed metal finish treated with a clear coat sealant to prevent surface corrosion. the west side elevated highway (west side highway or miller highway, named for julius miller, manhattan borough president from 1922 to 1930) was an elevated section of route ny-9a running along the hudson river in the new york city borough of manhattan to the tip of the island. it was an elevated highway, one of the first urban freeways in the world, and served as a prototype for urban freeways elsewhere, including boston’s central artery. built between 1929 and 1951, the highway’s narrow confines which could not accommodate trucks and sharp s exit ramps made the highway obsolete almost immediately. when chunks of the highway’s facade began to fall off due to lack of maintenance, and a truck and car fell through it at 14th street in 1973, the highway was shut down, and a debate began whether to renovate it or dismantle it. attitudes about urban planning had changed in the intervening decades, and the decision was made not to repair the decaying structure. a plan for the elevated highway to be replaced by an underground interstate-quality highway, which came to be called westway, had originally been proposed in 1971. in the interim between the closure of the elevated highway and the completion of its dismantling, while debate about westway was proceeding, remaining sections of the old highway structure began to be unofficially utilized as an elevated urban park, for jogging and bicycling. by 1989 the old elevated highway structure was totally dismantled, except for a small portion from 59th street to 72nd street, which, in effect, became the southern extension of the henry hudson parkway. the single-sided surface mount cast iron plaque measures 18 inches in diameter.","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default he obtained the aladdin trademark in 1908 and sold the first model of the american-made aladdin lamp in 1909. in 1926 johnson bought the lippincott glass factory in alexandria, indiana to make glass lamps, chimneys and shades, changing the name to aladdin industries. agents were recruited to sell lamps throughout the country and farm land. they demonstrated the aladdin and often left the lamp in the home for an overnight trial. the agent arranged for local merchants to stock supplies. in 1928 the company turned solely to franchise dealerssome 15,000 in the early 1930s. the company advertised extensively in newspapers and through radio. smilin ed mcconnell was so popular that he became the \"aladdin lamp man.\" in 1949 the company moved their central office from chicago to nashville, tennessee, the home of aladdin industries' today. aladdin lamps were made in the usa until 1963, after which brass lamps were imported from england. only the glass lamps continued to be made in the usa. the aladdin lamp was developed through application of scientific principles: ami argand, 1750-1803, invented the principle of center draft whereby air is provided inside a tubular wick to the flame of a lamp. argand's \"air lamps\" became known as \"argand lamps,\" which he first patented in england in 1784. dr. auer von welsbach, 1858-1929, an austrian chemist, invented the incandescent gas mantle in 1885, a huge improvement in the history of artificial lighting. the early technology of adapting the mantle to oil lamps was developed in germany. beginning in the early 1900s companies in the united states recognized the tremendous advantage of these improved lights. the aladdin lamp became the world-wide leader in non-pressure incandescent lamps during the next 50 years. the (used in conjunction with the pulley system) with original black stenciled markings and fanciful numbers. the gray paint finish used to heighten the visibility of the stenciling is original and intact. the unique measuring stick was lightly cleaned and sealed with a clear coat lacquer. possibly fabricated by or for the challenge company, batavia, il. several water tanks comprised of wood and steel found within the city of chicago were assembled by their company during the first part of the 20th century. the massive bunte candy factory factory (later converted into a high school before demolition) was designed by the architectural firm of schimdt, garden \u0026amp; martin. although known primarily for their commercial and industrial designs, the firm also designed several residential buildings, more than 300 hospitals and a few public structures. richard ernest schmidt studied architecture at the massachusetts institute of technology and worked for a number of architects (adolph cudell and charles sumner frost) before starting his own practice in 1887. eight years later, he asked hugh gorden garden to join him as chief of design. a native of toronto, canada, garden had moved to chicago in the late-1880′s, apprenticing with several architectural firms, including flanders \u0026amp; zimmerman, henry ives cobb, and shepley, rutan \u0026amp; coolidge. he then became a freelance renderer, which brought him jobs with howard van doren shaw, louis sullivan, and frank lloyd wright. in 1906, the schmidt-garden partnership was formalized under the name of richard e. schmidt, garden \u0026amp; martin. the third partner was edgar d. martin, who later joined the firm of pond \u0026amp; pond. schmidt brought business acumen and social connections to the partnership, while garden brought the imagination, inventiveness, and sensitivity of a creative designer and versatile draftsman. martin was an extremely skilled structural engineer who was able to solve technical problems associated with large industrial buildings and modern materials, such as the montgomery ward \u0026amp; co. catalog house, one of the first buildings to be constructed of reinforced concrete. garden helped evolve the firm’s progressive approach to design, much in the way that his contemporaries, sullivan and wright, had done. the style and details of garden’s architectural designs were so unique and distinctive that they often are referred to with the term “gardenesque.” the fabricator and\/or sculptor of the eagles has yet to be identified. the bunte factory was considered to be the largest prairie school style commercial building or factory in the country before being demolished in 2008. the candy factory ceased operations around 1960-61. in 1969, the building was then retrofitted into a chicago public school building. the bunte candy company dates back to 1876, when ferdinand bunte, gustav a. bunte, and charles a. spoehr started a candy manufactory on state street in chicago. after a few years, ferdinand's son theodore w. bunte took charge of the business. by the 1910's, when bunte bros. did annual sales of about $2.4 million, the company employed about 1,200 people. as late as the 1950's, it had over 1,000 workers in its chicago plants. in 1954, bunte brothers candy co. was purchased by chase candy co. of st. joseph, missouri, history of the trolleybus dates back to 29 april 1882, when dr. ernst werner von siemens ran his \"elektromote\" in a berlin suburb. this experimental demonstration continued until june 13, 1882, after which there was little progress in europe, although separate experiments were conducted in the usa. the next development was when lombard grin operated an experimental line at the paris exhibition of 1900 after four years of trials. max schiemann made the biggest step when on july 10, 1901 the world's first passenger-carrying trolleybus operated at bielathal (near dresden), in germany. schiemann built and operated the bielathal system, and is credited with developing the under-running trolley current collection system, with two horizontally parallel overhead wires and rigid trolleypoles spring-loaded to hold them up to the wires. although the bielathal system operated only until 1904, schiemann had developed what is now the standard trolleybus current collection system. in the early days there were a few different methods of current collection. the cedes-stoll system, designed by carl stoll, operated near dresden between 1902 and 1904, and in vienna. the lloyd-khler or bremen system was tried out in bremen, and the filovia was demonstrated near milan. leeds and bradford became the first cities to operate trolleybuses in the united kingdom on june 20, 1911. in the united states, some cities, led by the brooklyn-manhattan transit corporation (bmtnew york), subscribed to the all-four concept of using buses, trolleybuses, streetcars and rapid transit subway and\/or elevated lines, as appropriate, for routes ranging from lightly used to the heaviest trunk line. buses and trolleybuses in particular were seen as entry systems that could later be upgraded to rail as appropriate. although the bmt in brooklyn built only one trolleybus line, other cities, notably san francisco, california, and philadelphia, pennsylvania, built larger systems and still maintain \"all-four\". a number of trolleybus lines in the united states came into existence when a tracked trolley route did not have sufficient ridership to warrant track maintenance or advertising purposes. two years after the first mass-produced picture postal card was developed in austro-hungary by 1870, the first commercial advertisement was sent as a postcard in england. the u.s. government didn't embrace the concept of the postal card until 1872. that year the u.s. postal service issued “pioneer” cards, which had a blank space on the front of the card for the sender's message (the other side was strictly for the address). the first advertising picture \"pioneer\" postcard in the u.s. commemorated the world columbian exposition of 1893 in chicago, and the government issued several other ad cards in the following five years. it wasn’t until 1898 that commercial enterprises were allowed to print their own postcards, and in 1907 divided-back cards created space for a message on the card's reverse. postcards could be mailed for a penny each, so businesses and politicians used the medium as a means to get their messages out, creating the first junk mail. since most of these cards were seen as worthless solicitations and thrown into the trash—just as junk mail now goes directly to the recycling bin—advertising postcards are therefore more valuable today than postcards such as birthday cards or world’s fair souvenirs, which were saved and treasured by recipients. exposition cards in particular, starting with that 1893 world columbian exposition, are incredibly common now. most are view cards portraying the fairgrounds or individual attractions of the world’s fair, which were events held in major cities around the globe to encourage cross-cultural travel, trade, and understanding.","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default scenes; george h. durrie, who supplied winter scenes; and frances flora bond palmer, who liked to do picturesque panoramas of the american landscape, and who was the first woman in the united states to make her living as a full-time artist. all lithographs were produced on lithographic limestone printing plates on which the drawing was done by hand. a stone often took over a week to prepare for printing. each print was pulled by hand. prints were hand-colored by a dozen or more women, often immigrants from germany with an art background, who worked in assembly-line fashion, one color to a worker, and who were paid $6 for every 100 colored prints. the favored colors were clear and simple, and the drawing was bold and direct. the earliest lithographs were printed in black and then colored by hand. as new techniques were developed, publishers began to produce full-color lithographs that gradually developed softer, more painterly effects. skilled artist lithographers like john cameron, fanny palmer and others represented in the show became known for their work and signed important pieces. artists like a. f. tait became famous when their paintings were reproduced as lithographs. currier and ives was the most prolific and successful company of lithographers in the u.s. its lithographs represented every phase of american life, and included the themes of hunting, fishing, whaling, city life, rural scenes, historical scenes, clipper ships, yachts, steamships, the mississippi river, hudson river scenes, railroads, politics, comedy, gold mining, winter scenes, commentary on life, portraits, and still lifes. from 1866 on, the firm occupied three floors in a building at 33 spruce street in new york. small works sold for from five to twenty cents each and large works sold for $1 to $3 a piece. the currier and ives firm branched out from its central shop in new york city to sell prints via pushcart vendors, peddlers and book stores. the firm sold retail as well as wholesale, establishing outlets in cities across the country and in london. it also sold work through the mail (prepaid orders only), and internationally through a london office and agents in europe. the 19th-century victorian public, with its interest in current events and sentimental taste, was receptive to the firm's products. currier and ives prints were among the most popular wall hangings of the day. in 1872, the currier and ives catalog proudly proclaimed: \"... our prints have become a staple article... in great demand in every part of the country... in fact without exception, all that we have published have met with a quick and ready sale. currier \u0026amp; ives prints were among the household decorations considered appropriate for a proper home by catharine esther beecher and harriet beecher stowe, authors of american woman's home (1869): \"the great value of pictures for the home would be, after all, in their sentiment. they should express the sincere ideas and tastes of the household and not the tyrannical dicta of some art critic or neighbo.\" currier died in 1888. ives remained active in the firm until his death in 1895. both currier's and ives's sons followed their fathers in the business, which was eventually liquidated in 1907. because of improvements in offset printing and photoengraving, the public demand for lithographs had gradually diminished. the prints depicted a variety of images of american life, including winter scenes; horse-racing images; portraits of people; and pictures of ships, sporting events, patriotic and historical events, including ferocious battles of the american civil war, the building of cities and railroads, and lincoln's assassination. the original lithographs shared similar characteristics in inking and paper, and adhered to folio sizes. sizes of the images were standard (trade cards, very small folios, small folios, medium folios, large folios), and their measurement did not include the title or borders. currier used a cotton based, medium to heavy weight paper depending on the folio size for his prints until the late 1860s. from about 1870, currier \u0026amp; ives used paper mixed with a small amount of wood pulp. in addition, currier's inking process resembled a mixture of elongated splotches and dashes of ink with a few spots, a characteristic that modern reproductions would not possess. in 1907 when the firm was liquidated most of the lithographic stones had the image removed and were sold by the pound, with some stones' final home being as land fill in central park. those few stones that managed to survive intact were of large folio clipper ships, small folio dark town comics, a medium folio \"abraham lincoln\" and a small folio \"washington as a mason\".","brand":"vendor-unknown","offers":[{"title":"Default locomotive was a 1,500-horsepower b-b freight- and passenger-hauling diesel locomotive produced between july 1945 and february 1949 by general motors’ electro-motive division. final assembly was located at the la grange, illinois plant. a total of 1,111 cab-equipped lead a units and 696 cabless booster b units were built. the f3 was the third model in gm-emd's highly successful f-unit series of cab unit diesel locomotives, and it was the second most produced of the series. the f3 essentially differed from the emd f2 in that it used the “new” d12 generator to produce more power, and from the later emd f7 in electrical equipment. some late-model f3s had the same d27 traction motors used in the f7, and were nicknamed f5 models. as built, the only way to distinguish between the f2 and f3 was the nose number panels on the a units, which were small on the f2 and large on the f3 and subsequent locomotives. early versions of the f3 had the \"chicken wire\" grilles along the top edge of the carbody. later production featured a distinctive stamped stainless steel grille. all f-units introduced after the ft have twin exhaust stacks and four radiator fans arranged close together atop their roofs, unlike the ft's four stacks and separated pairs of fans. eleven f3s survive today at a variety of museums; nine are a units, while two are b units. very few of the surviving f3 units
